The wine

A true classic, a historic wine, highly-acclaimed globally and with an international flavour, made by an illustrious winery and only in the best vintage years. Perfect for great celebrations!

Gran Claustro pays tribute to the wine-making past of the Empordà, Cataluña's most northerly region, and constitutes one of the most established labels made by Perelada, the emblematic winery with special links to the local area and close ties to the arts and culture. Regarding this wine, the homage extends to the Carmelite convent attached to the winery's castle, located in the town of Perelada itself.

Gran Claustro is made from a selection of Cabernet Sauvignon (30%), Merlot (29%), Ull de Llebre or Tempranillo (19%), Syrah (13%) and Garnacha (9%) grapes, sourced from the various Perelada estates. Harvested manually, at their optimum point of ripeness and only in the best vintage years, the wine undergoes an ageing period of 18 months in new Bordeaux barrels of French Allier oak and further months in bottle before its release onto the market. The end result is an opulent and complex wine which has yet to attain more elegance in years to come.

On the nose, the notable aromas are those usually associated with international varieties and ageing: leather, chocolate, coconut, nutmeg, ginger..., an array which contrasts with but also complements the minerality conferred by the terroir: earthy notes, hints of undergrowth and wild mushrooms... A profound and mineral wine, with a pleasant sweetness, well-matured, dense but supple and silky on the palate.

For over 25 years Delfí Sanahuja has been the chief oenologist...
