The wine

Château Haut-Bailly produces around 150,000 bottles a year, arising from 31 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot vines, some of which are pre-phylloxera stock. The gravel soils, with more earth than is usual in the region, are a factor in being able to drink, within a relatively short time, one of Bordeaux's most elegant and delightful wines. Nevertheless, the wine, which can be drunk in its early years, ages beyond twenty without any problem at all.

Bottles of Haut-Bailly are replete with redcurrants, blackcurrants and cherries, forest and tobacco and that touch of graphite so typically Bordeaux; they represent the essence of Graves: powerfulness, elegance, complexity and longevity. Its tannins are firm but sweet and confirm the fine work carried out by Véronique Sanders in the winery. The wine exhibits an opaque purple that tints the glass, and it caresses the palate, fluctuating between richness and gracefulness, delicacy and complexity. It can be drunk whilst young thanks to the abundance of fruit, but its firm tannins will enable it to continue evolving for decades.

The 2017 Haut-Bailly is composed of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. Very deep garnet-purple colored, it has a wonderfully spicy nose of cinnamon stick, cloves, anise and fenugreek with core of roses, warm blueberries, black forest cake and black raspberries plus hints of underbrush and iron ore. Medium to full-bodied with firm, ripe, grainy tannins, it has oodles of freshness and great finesse, continuing bright and energetic on the long, minerally finish.

Tasted blind. Deep ruby colour. Quite earthy and savoury on the nose – peppery hedgerow fruit has a lightly warming quality. The palate shows savoury fruit at the core with fair intensity, yet there is an earthy, leafy edge here. Firm and slender, this tightly wound wine may need time to truly flourish.

Blackberry, walnut, iodine, and sandalwood aromas follow through to a full body, round and juicy tannins and an intense, flavorful finish. This shows richness with structure. Excellent 2017. Try after 2023.

Château Haut-Bailly is a reference point among Bordeaux wines. This Grand Cru Classé de Graves is located to the east of the town of Léognan, very near to Château Carbonnieux. The vineyard came into being in 1630, thanks to a Parisian banker, Firmin Le Bailly, but it was Alcide Bellot des Minières who brought about its prestige in 1872. Its second renaissance dates back to 1955, when it was bought by a Belgian businessman and experienced 15 vintages of extraordinary wines....
