The wine

The Bodegas Exopto winery has used the classic Rioja blend of Grenache, Tempranillo and a little Graciano to produce this gem of a wine. Extremely fruity and expressive, it is a well-balanced wine which is easy to drink. Thanks to the experience and wisdom of our winemaking ancestors who developed this combination of grapes, we can enjoy fresh and juicy wines like the Bozeto de Exopto.

It has a dark and intense Picota cherry colour in the glass, though not too opaque. An excellent concentration of fruit is noticeable from the first glance, and the legs seen when swirling the wine in the glass show it will have a glyceric and dense feel. Wild and spicy aromas stand out in the nose, especially notes of black pepper, eucalyptus and cranberries. It maintains its freshness in the mouth while offering a somewhat more mature feeling, with hints of plums and cherries in liqueur. Cocoa, good tannins, and earthy sensations of dry aromatic herbs such as bay leaves accompany well-integrated aromas of ageing reminiscent of cedar. Added to this, an elegant hint of orange peel gives fragrance to the flavoursome, appetizing and warm feeling enjoyed on drinking. Bozeto de Exopto has the easily recognizable features of a Rioja wine, yet is still a personal wine with its own unique attractiveness.

Fermented in concrete tanks and then aged in concrete and wood for six months while respecting the fruit, Bozeto is a small yet great wine, rounded and complete, brimming with fruit. It expresses its terroir wonderfully with the landscape present in every sip through hints of iron and graphite. A wine which tastes and smells of earth and fruit; an honest, expressive, juicy and friendly wine, with structure and body — all in all, a very complete wine.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker

The very young red 2021 Bozeto de Exopto mixes Tempranillo from Ábalos and Mediterranean Garnacha from Alfaro (with 10% Graciano), and it seems very balanced, with good ripeness (14.5%), showing the Garnacha and the more austere Graciano with nice fruit and freshness. It's serious and has complexity and depth beyond its price point. It matured in a combination of concrete and oak containers for some six months. Excellent value in one of the finest vintages for this wine. 70,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2022.

Bodegas Exopto

Tom Puyaubert arrived in Spain early in the year 2000 from his native Bordeaux, as a sales rep for a famous French cooperage, but coming into daily contact with some of the country’s best winemakers made him feel not only more passionate about wine but also in particular for La Rioja, its vineyards, its wine-growing culture... In 2003 he founded Bodegas Exopto and since then his project has continued to make good progress, producing wines with personality, always using...
