The wine

Garnacha By Artazu is a different Garnacha. In a blind tasting, we might well think it's a Tempranillo, but not a Garnacha. Undoubtedly Atlantic in character, fresh and pleasing, it exhibits delightful aromas of fresh blackberries, just plucked from the bush. The Garnacha gradually reveals itself, displaying great fruit intensity (after the blackberries, fleshy red cherries start appearing), floral nuances and an elegance which comes as no surprise when you discover what's on the label: Artazu, Artadi.

Garnacha By Artazu is a young wine, that's not spent time in oak —although the odd aroma might have made you think so— and so exactly what you might expect: direct, easy-drinking, with a silky, creamy texture. A red with good body, very clean fruit, fresh and honest that leaves us with a fruit-driven finish, once again revealing recently-picked blackberries and a feel of the countryside, woodlands, all natural. To sum up, a classy young wine, bearing the hallmark of authenticity, which shows the potential and the wealth of nuances that a grape so closely identified with its land is capable of offering.

Artadi offers us its "By Artadi" range, a series of wines rooted in the indigenous variety and their land of origin: Tempranillo from Álava, Monastrell from Alicante and Garnacha from Navarra. They are wines made from the produce of their own vineyards, those which, although still young, have already reached considerable maturity and provide balanced yields. Single varietal wines that show all the strength of the fruit, maintain the impetus of youth and demonstrate their maturity in the way they express themselves thanks to a respectful ageing. The red in the Garnacha By Artazu series originates from the vineyards which the winery owns in the town of Artazu, from vines planted at an altitude of 480 m and lying on Quaternary alluvial soils, with a very calcareous substratum.

Bodegas y Viñedos Artazu

Bodegas y Viñedos Artazu

Bodegas y Viñedos Artazu belongs to the Artadi group of wineries and is one of two ventures which Juan Carlos López de Lacalle (also of Bodegas y Viñedos El Sequé, in the Alicante D.O.) employs in his attempt to bring out the richness and varietal nuances of such a wholly indigenous grape as the Garnacha. It all began in 1996 with the acquisition of 10 ha of vineyards aged more than 60 years old in the locality of Artazu (Valdizarbe), a well-known, old wine-producing village...
