The wine

Located in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, where it is considered quite an institution, Bodegas Hidalgo La Gitana is currently run by the fifth generation of the Hidalgo family and possesses more than 200 hectares of vineyards on the Balbaina and Miraflores estates, the best in the Jerez District. The winery, barely 300 metres from the mouth of the River Guadalquivir, benefits from a maritime influence for maturing the wines, which leaves its mark upon the ageing and special characteristics of their range of Manzanillas, Amontillados and Olorosos.

Amontillados are Finos which have begun the oxidation process, relinquishing somewhat their delicate and saline character, and acquiring a more profound, complex and expressive profile. Made from Palomino Fino grapes, the Amontillado Napoleón undergoes a maturation of 12 years in the criadera and solera system, which results in a pungent and very aromatic Amontillado.

An Amontillado exhibiting nuances from biological ageing, with the most notable being notes of dried fruits and nuts, oak, toast and raisins. With a definite saltiness, but pleasantly crisp, dry and persistent on the palate. Ideal to accompany aperitifs, white meats, blue cheeses, cured cheeses and savoury dishes.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker and Jancis Robinson

The medium amber, nutty Napoleon Amontillado is a dry style sherry, also a fine aperitif.

Amber colour with a hint of mahogany. Roasted chestnuts and generous smokiness on the nose. The palate is drier and more grippy than the nose might suggest. Driven with fresh and lifted acidity. Dried fruit and nuts mingle with preserved lemons. Mulling spices linger on the finish.
