The wine

Ossian is a pure Verdejo, an impressive and individual white. The grapes originate from pre-phylloxera vineyards grown organically in the village of Nieva, in Segovia. After fermentation, the wine is matured in oak vats in the old Monastery of El Parral, in an area of Rueda with the highest altitude. It appears the lovely colour of old gold and has a creamy nose revealing the combined aromas of recently-cut grass, orange peel and white flowers with toasty notes and hints of dried fruits and nuts derived from its ageing. On the palate it's very well-balanced, with extremely good acidity and very well-gauged oak. It's full, glyceric, spicy and has an elegant, intense finish. Always among Spain's best whites. Decanting is advisable.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker

The eponymous 2020 Ossian was produced with Verdejo grapes from old, organically farmed vines around the village of Nieva (Segovia), a zone where phylloxera didn't reach. They consider 2020 their finest vintage to date, with a big change from 2018 and when they have achieved a much better understanding of their vineyards. It has notes of pit fruit and sweet spices, with good weight on the palate, moderate alcohol (13.5%) and ripeness and good freshness and balance. It's serious and with potential to develop in bottle. 80,000 bottles produced.

Ossian Vides y Vinos

Founded in 2005, Ossian joined the Alma Carraovejas group in 2013. They own 40 hectares of exceptional vineyards in Nieva, the highest point in the Rueda DO appellation at altitudes between 840 and 930 metres. Old pre-phylloxera ungrafted vines between 100 and 200 years old, which survived the phylloxera plague thanks to the sandy soils, produce small bunches of extremely high quality tiny grapes. The winery also has a few slate vineyards and old riverside...
