The wine

In each bottle of Marqués de Riscal Reserva there exists a history, in fact the history of La Rioja's oldest winery, and the one which was already conserving the largest number of bottles back in the 1920s, when no other bodega had started to store its wines. They were pioneers at Riscal in the production of modern wine back then, following the techniques employed in Bordeaux, and they continue today to be right out in front. Most definitely, an excellent winery.

The Marqués de Riscal winery was also pioneer in bringing the French grape variety, the Sauvignon Blanc to Rueda. The first vines took root in 1974 and it is now one of the officially-accepted varieties grown in this appellation. At present the winery has 70 hectares of vines with an average age of over 25 years old.

The Marqués de Riscal Sauvignon offers aromas of fresh fruit, such as citrics, pineapple, and melon, and notes of minerals and fresh grass. Aged over its fine lees for a short period of time, the production method gives it plenty of volume and provides us with a wine which can evolve well in the bottle for at least two years. Its excellent acidity leaves a pleasant feeling of freshness in the mouth, with a clear, long and lingering finish.

Marqués de Riscal, Herederos

Marqués de Riscal's history began in 1858 when its founder, Camilo Hurtado de Amézaga, started to apply in Elciego wine-making techniques employed in Bordeaux. Jean Pineau, the master winemaker at Château Lanessan in the Haut Medoc, gave his professional advice to the then sixth Marquis of Riscal regarding the production of wines following the French system, therefore abandoning the rough and rather unrefined style of Rioja wine and thus establishing La Rioja's first modern...
