Empordà, a land of wind and wine

Empordà in northern Catalonia is home to top quality wines which, surprisingly, do not enjoy the same fame and popularity of wines from other areas of Spain. The county is divided into two regions, Baix Empordà in the south and Alt Empordà to the north where we will find the wines in today’s selection. Here, mountain ranges roll down from the Pyrenees almost as far as the sea and the relentless Tramuntana northern wind blows fiercely. Granite and slate soils are a challenge for vines but also transmit all their energy to the fruit. It is an exciting landscape with traditional villages such as Pau and its spectacular Romanesque monastery, at the foot of the Serra de Rodes hills but only 10 km from the coast. Winemaking is also carried out further inland in towns like Capmany and Sant Climent Sescebes. All three share the essence of the spectacular Alt Empordà region, a contrast between hardiness and Mediterranean elegance, and produce wines which undoubtedly have features in common with wines from the other side of the Pyrenees. Empordà winters are not too demanding and the hot summer days are tempered by the sea breeze making the area an excellent location for winemaking. The strong northern winds so frequent here are also a key factor, ensuring the grapes are dry and healthy and creating the seductive personality of Empordà wines.

Grenache and Carignan are the star grapes locally with many relatively old vines growing here. However, the open-minded Empordà winemakers have welcomed the arrival of French varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay which, in the right location and under the watchful eye of experienced winegrowers, also produce great wines here. Red wines are usually full-bodied, smooth, herbal, expressive and well-balanced, often with a moderating hint of oak. White wines are flavoursome and fresh in their youth, gaining in complexity and nuances as they age elegantly.
