The wine

Calatayud is one of those denominations that seems to suffer from a prolonged lethargy, maybe because its neighbour, the Campo de Borja DO, takes the limelight, but this is far from the truth. The Garnacha Tinta, the grape that holds sway in the Campo de Borja because of its lovely nature and sweet roundness, reveals a character of its own, totally different in the Calatayud DO, and most especially at Bodegas Atteca.

The Atteca fruit is ripe and dark, but somewhat less pleasant and rounded than in the Campo de Borja. Its character is rather more harsh in Calatayud, but the good use of oak tones down any possible harshness producing a wine that's intense but pleasant overall. Roasted and liquorice aromas mingle with hints of jams and spices creating a luscious wine that's also intense. It has features of a New World wine, yet never loses for one moment its marks of typicity. Juicy, enveloping and elegantly spiced, it will prove surprising for even savvy enthusiasts of red wine. A masterful Garnacha!

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker

The 2018 Atteca feels more harmonious and fresher than the 2019 I tasted next to it, despite both having similar alcohol levels (15%) and almost the same acidity and pH parameters. One extra year in bottle has polished the tannins, and the cooler, even if more challenging year seems to have given it an extra spark. It's still a full-bodied and powerful Garnacha that can handle powerful food. 72,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2019.
