The wine

If you have ever had the chance to visit the Alta Alella (AA) winery and enjoy the sea views from their vineyards, your first sip of this Grenache wine will immediately remind you of that day thanks to the openness and transparency of the coarse sand soil, the geniality of the Mediterranean, and the sweetness of Grenache. Translucent in the glass, its nose reminds us of a walk among the forests and scrubland which surround their vineyards. With aromas of small wild strawberries and fine herbs, it offers the graceful acidity of Grenache grapes cultivated and harvested with the utmost care, and the tantalizing taste of this variety so well-suited to warmer climes. Lactic and floral (violets and wild flowers) notes, hints of red liquorice sweets and a slightly spicy touch accompany a wonderfully juicy mouth. It has a seductively subtle and airy feel, almost as if the wine floats above our palate. A pinch of fine salt on the sides of the tongue reminds the drinker of the sea and brings with it the fresh sensation of the morning dew in the vineyards. Painstaking work in the winery focused on respect for the character of the fruit at each harvest means the Alta Alella Grenache reaches us every year like a breath of fresh air. It is like a bite of freshly collected fruit, a great yet modest and honest wine, but with its own character. Served cool (12-14º) it can be enjoyed as a welcome starter drink while we finish preparing the meal, or with informal and light dishes, whereas served at 16º it pairs well with more substantial meals such as lightly spiced pork or duck, often accompanied with red fruit sauces.

Alta Alella

The family-run project of Josep Maria Pujol-Busquets and Cristina Guillén. After travelling half way round the world making wine, from Allela to the Penedès, spending time in the Priorat, La Rioja and the Ribera del Duero, and also in France and Italy as technical director for the Martini Group, Josep Maria Pujol-Busquets managed to reconcile work and family with his passion for wine at his new estate of Can Genís (1991), where “transparent” wines are made: wines which reflect...
