We start our search in the DOCa Rioja appellation where, contrary to what many believe, it is possible to find top red wines at reasonable prices. Tom Puyaubert gives a Bordeaux touch to his wines at Bodegas Exopto which has not gone unnoticed by international critics. We're sure you will share the same feeling of enjoyment as soon as you try the Bozeto.
Further west, Venta Mazarrón offers the character of a Zamora Tempranillo for a better price than wines from the neighbouring DO Toro appellation, though they express the same character thanks to the soils and climate they share. Venta Mazarrón is intensity and elegance in a bottle, soil and fruit, power and rustic seductiveness.
Last but not least, in Catalonia we find one of the most rounded, juicy and expressive wines produced in the Montsant region, the Mineral. Ripe red fruit, spices like cloves and pepper, and an intense sensation of pleasant typicity.
Open any of these wines, and you will not be disappointed — all three are sure to delight. Some wines are worth much more than they cost.

Young red Crianza. Bodegas Exopto Rioja, Spain Grenache, Tempranillo, Graciano
Bottle: £6.02 club members / £6.95 non-members
It has a dark and intense Picota cherry colour in the glass, though not too opaque. An excellent concentration of fruit is noticeable from the first glance, and the legs seen when swirling the wine in the glass show it will have a glyceric and dense feel. Wild and spicy aromas stand out in the nose, especially notes of black pepper, eucalyptus and cranberries. It maintains its freshness in the mouth while offering a somewhat more mature feeling, with hints of plums and cherries in liqueur. Cocoa, good tannins, and earthy sensations of dry aromatic herbs such as bay leaves accompany well-integrated aromas of ageing reminiscent of cedar. Added to this, an elegant hint of orange peel gives fragrance to the flavoursome, appetizing and warm feeling enjoyed on drinking. Bozeto de Exopto has the easily recognizable features of a Rioja wine, yet is still a personal wine with its own unique attractiveness.
Fermented in concrete tanks and then aged in concrete and wood for six months while respecting the fruit, Bozeto is a small yet great wine, rounded and complete, brimming with fruit. It expresses its terroir wonderfully with the landscape present in every sip through hints of iron and graphite. A wine which tastes and smells of earth and fruit; an honest, expressive, juicy and friendly wine, with structure and body — all in all, a very complete wine.

Young red. Cara Nord Montsant, Spain Carignan, Grenache
Bottle: £7.75 club members / £8.81 non-members
Irregular terrains, sustainable agriculture and a dry climate ensure the grapes reach an excellent level of quality. Chalky and red clay soils with a certain degree of influence from the continental climate give character to every single bunch of grapes. The grapes, fruit of a year's hard work, are respected in the production process thanks to a careful ageing in wood.
A bright red colour with a seductive nose of cherries, vanilla and white pepper. Aromas of scrubland and black fruit skins over a mineral background give way to more delicate floral hints which appear over time. Flavoursome and fresh from the very first sip, it is an enveloping wine with a saline touch. Spongy and airy thanks to abundant but clear tannins, it has enough acidity to counterbalance the fine taste of liqueur, while the wood adds hints of smoke and ash which create a suggestive and well-balanced wine. A powerful and elegant wine with lactic sensations appearing as it stands in the glass as well as flavours of red fruit jam adorned with cinnamon and black pepper. A subtle and balanced finish, with graphite minerality and toasted coffee-like hints from its time spent in the barrel.

Young red Crianza. Viñas del Cénit Castile and León, Spain Tempranillo
Bottle: £8.53 club members / £9.69 non-members
For their Venta Mazarrón wine, Viñas del Cenit use their youngest vines which, being 40 years old, would actually be considered old vines in different locations. Traditional and sustainable vine-growing methods ensure that their wines are enveloping, warm and rich. The climate and soils here are similar to those in the neighbouring DO Toro appellation and the wines share the same characteristics — wines full of the typicity of Zamora, with earthy aromas of rich opulent black fruit. Spices such as cinnamon, cloves and pepper mix with soothing balsamic, almost minty, tones of bay leaves and undergrowth. Its intensity can be clearly felt through a strong tannicity and perfect acidity which maintain an excellent balance. Classic hints of good wood give elegance to a strongly cherry-coloured wine with deep aromas. Liquorice and blackberries delight while the vigour of this splendid wine is adorned with a fine silkiness of pure pleasure as it swills around your cheeks. A bitter and somewhat dry ending, with creamy hints of oak and touches of clove and leather, it is an unctuous wine with a very, very long finish.
