About this selection...

If we had to make a choice between the honest, elegant or effusive we'd probably feel we'd been given a hard decision to make. These qualities are always highly regarded with regard to both people and wines, although they often intermingle with other merits and defects, making it difficult to distinguish them clearly. In certain instances, one of these attributes stands out above the rest and becomes a person's, or in this case, a wine's true essence.

L'Efecte Volador is a wine of inherent honesty, great transparency, foremost in fact. Everything in it is natural, almost spontaneous; the fruit is fresh and direct, and the aromas of flowers and wild bushes seem to want to take us for a walk through a meadow, to submerge us in nature. Would this be because the stalks were used in wine-making? Or perhaps it's the wild yeasts?

Pujanza Hado is elegance turned into wine. The lively, crystal-clear red fruit, a real breath of fresh air among wines derived from over-extraction and excess. The altitude, the Rioja Alavesa and the Tempranillo bring all their attributes together in a red whose quality is undeniably apparent from the first sip.

Finally, the effusive energy that makes us want to share good feelings, our finest emotions. That's exactly what happens with Atteca; the wine is so keen to demonstrate its luscious character, and also its juiciness and absolute pleasantness that it appears to want to reach out to us in a show of affection.

If we've come to the point where it's simply impossible to choose between the honest, elegant or effusive, don't worry, on this occasion choosing isn't required. L'Efecte Volador, Pujanza Hado and Atteca are all of them and much more, they're three individual wines full of contrasts which will guarantee you immense enjoyment.

L'Efecte Volador 2016 (2 bottles)

Young red Crianza. Josep Grau Viticultor Montsant, Spain Grenache, Carignan

Bottle: £6.65 club members / £7.95 non-members

On very rare occasions, a wine producer's character is transferred to the bottles, in a way that nobody ventures to explain but many appreciate. L'Efecte Volador is one of those transparent wines, direct and magical, in which its creator seems to lie hidden behind the glass. Josep Grau is a thoughtful, quiet and sincere man, who fine-tunes his wines according to his own personality.

L'Efecte Volador is the pure essence of fruit, of Garnacha, of Montsant. Its ageing in concrete intensifies the fruit's primary role and provides the wine over time with elegance. Making their presence felt are strawberries and the fine minerality emanating from the terroir that produces the grapes. Lactic hints, spices and a subtle herbaceous suggestion enhance a benchmark red among young Montsant wines, one which takes you to an unpretentious world, where the most primary sensations assume all the prominence which too often is denied them.

Pujanza Hado 2014 (2 bottles)

Red Crianza. Bodegas y Viñedos Pujanza Rioja, Spain Tempranillo

Bottle: £8.81 club members / £10.38 non-members

Pujanza has been synonymous with elegance right from its early beginnings. The winery has understood how to respect the essence of Rioja tradition, but applying the required touches of modernity which allow its wines to adapt to contemporary times.

Pujanza Hado is the winery's initial wine, yet it already possesses all the merits of its older siblings. Its fruit is red and intense and the oak acts as a compliment whose only function is to enhance. The altitude of the vineyards and the complexity derived from a calcareous-clay soil form the profile of a wine that has the foundations of a great red, one of those wines in which everything is as it should be (acidity, tannins...), in perfect harmony.

It has character but there's no arrogance, it comes over as direct and fresh, but always based on elegance and refinement. The freshness of wild red berry fruit, spices like cloves and pepper, and a lactic touch laced with shavings of orange peel and fine toasty notes ensure that Pujanza Hado will be liked by all and intriguing to many.

Atteca 2015 (2 bottles)

Young red Crianza. Bodegas Ateca Calatayud, Spain Grenache

Bottle: £8.81 club members / £10.38 non-members

Calatayud is one of those denominations that seems to suffer from a prolonged lethargy, maybe because its neighbour, the Campo de Borja DO, takes the limelight, but this is far from the truth. The Garnacha Tinta, the grape that holds sway in the Campo de Borja because of its lovely nature and sweet roundness, reveals a character of its own, totally different in the Calatayud DO, and most especially at Bodegas Atteca.

The Atteca fruit is ripe and dark, but somewhat less pleasant and rounded than in the Campo de Borja. Its character is rather more harsh in Calatayud, but the good use of oak tones down any possible harshness producing a wine that's intense but pleasant overall. Roasted and liquorice aromas mingle with hints of jams and spices creating a luscious wine that's also intense. It has features of a New World wine, yet never loses for one moment its marks of typicity. Juicy, enveloping and elegantly spiced, it will prove surprising for even savvy enthusiasts of red wine. A masterful Garnacha!
