About this selection...

Christmas is a very special, magical time of year. An invisible atmosphere of goodwill brings out the best in all of us. We're touched by kindness, generosity and positive feelings as we cheerfully embrace that Christmas spirit.

We've come to expect our yearly visit from Santa Claus, Befana or Babushka; elves, fairies and gnomes play their part in our traditions, but it's those three majestic, wise men we could never forget, especially in countries with Christian beliefs: the 3 Kings. As the story goes, their role was to take gifts to the infant Jesus, namely gold, incense and myrrh. Nowadays, of course, presents come in a very different shape, but the excitement on children's faces each year never loses its magic, still being wondrous to watch.

With the Club's Christmas edition, we'd like you to experience something akin to the same excitement enjoyed by children. We're offering you three magical and majestic wines, the sort you'd expect to find on the table during these festivities, three wines which will immediately put you into a comfortingly Christmas mood. Our very own Melchor, Gaspar and Baltasar will this year take the form of Agustí Torelló Mata Gran Reserva Brut Nature, Emilio Moro and Valenciso.

The first is a benchmark sparkling wine for any Brut Nature devotee, a grand Cava with an elegance matched by few. Golden, subtly perfumed and producing creamy bubbles, the Agustí Torelló Mata Gran Reserva Brut Nature possesses all the merits you might associate with a fine, world-class sparkling wine.

Emilio Moro simply means the Ribera del Duero. Our second wine is a pedigree red, the winery's alma mater according to the producers themselves. Juicy, perfectly balanced and sporting polished tannins, it's sure to provide some memorable combinations when teamed up with meats and cheeses.

To complete the selection, we're suggesting a wine which comprises both tradition and modernity, the absolute essence of Rioja but also the denomination's future. Tempranillo, oak barrels, the Rioja Alta and an Atlantic influence are often splendid, stand-alone terms, but when they're combined into a perfectly synchronised ensemble, the result is heavenly and it's called Valenciso.

Let's imagine capturing the true essence of Cava Brut Nature in a bottle, and what comes to mind? The picture created will probably feature the unmistakable appearance of a bottle of Agustí Torelló Mata Gran Reserva Brut Nature.

With the three classic varieties as a mainstay, and after four years of maturing bottle, this sublime sparkling wine acquires a truly exceptional character and elegance. It's a golden colour, with a continuous flow of minuscule bubbles. On the nose it reveals white fruit, citrus notes and the delicate petals of fading white blossom. Its palate is restrained, tinged with a subtle bitterness, as befits a long-aged Brut Nature. Its passage is creamy and sufficiently fluid, marked by the appealing aromas of toasted almond skin, butter and fine aniseed touches. A very elegant and persistent finish, enhanced by hints of yeast and rose petals.

Ideal to drink with almost anything, apart from sweet desserts.

NOTE: As the house's general rule and a quality assurance, all the bottles include the disgorgement date which indicates exactly when the Cava concluded its ageing.

Emilio Moro is the bodega's top production wine, and the one that proudly bears the founder's name and image. In the words of José Moro, "it's the ALMA MATER, it's my father, and that says it all". Indeed, there's not much more to add: produced using vines aged between 15 and 25 years old, it picks up the essence of the three types of soil found in the Ribera del Duero endowing the wine with a wide variety of nuances. A lovely wine, rich, fresh, lively, elegant, complex...: the winery's flagship and a great representative of this Castilian denomination.

In the glass, it appears a Picota cherry colour and replicates a great variety of olfactory sensations which will go on lasting afterwards on the palate in an intense, most pleasant and satisfying way. Its richness and aroma variety are a focal feature, complete with toasty notes, cherries, liquorice and vanilla. On the palate it's juicy and fresh, easily identifiable as a Ribera del Duero due to how well it combines giving expression and pure pleasure. It's harmonious, with the fruit taking the limelight; having soft tannins and perfectly integrated oak, it's seductively appealing and immensely enjoyable to drink.

Valenciso 2010 (2 bottles)

Red Reserva. Compañía Bodeguera de Valenciso Rioja, Spain Tempranillo

Valenciso is a very fine wine and a reliable Rioja, which satisfies both classic palates and those who like their wines more modern in style. Its excellent balance between fruit and oak is one of its greatest merits, which is maintained vintage after vintage. They are famous at Valenciso for doing things well, for being consistent and meticulous, and confirmation of this comes simply by opening one of their bottles.

It's made exclusively from Tempranillo variety grapes, from single vineyards in Ollauri, Briones, Rodezno, Haro and Villalba, cultivated via sustainable viticulture on calcareous-clay soils, in northern Rioja Alta, benefitting from the Atlantic influence typically found in that part. After harvesting by hand, the destalked but whole grapes ferment and macerate in concrete tanks; afterwards, a third of the wine matures in light and medium toast French oak barrels for 19 months. Finally, it's racked again to a concrete container for settling and stabilising naturally for 12 months before being bottled.

Once uncorked, Valenciso releases energy, life, plenty of fruit and reveals its fine ageing. It's elegant, expressive, intense and harmonious. It's complex too, with a wide variety of fruit notes (cherries, raspberries, plums, blackberries), hints of crystallised fruit, lactic notes, earthy touches, subtle suggestions of leather... with none of these aromas being especially dominant, so that its true character emanates from the blend as a whole, a wonderful rich scent, becoming ever more harmonious the longer it spends in the glass. On the palate it's very juicy, powerful and sinewy but with pleasant tannins, and it has a dry spicy undertone and lovely viscosity which exemplify its unmistakable Rioja character. Very easy to drink, juicy, most pleasurable... A wine that blossoms in the glass and looks forward to a long life ahead. Always worth having a few bottles in store. Try one and you'll want some more!
