About this selection...

At the start of the year we're full of great ideas and long to make new discoveries, yet also look forward to returning to old ways, perhaps considering a simple change of perspective or frame of mind in our normal daily routine. As regards wines, we search out new labels, but also uncover nuances in our regular favourites. New wines appear on the scene, while others are updated or we ourselves rediscover them.

This month we're proposing you experience the personality of a great Rioja classic, Viña Alberdi 2009, and discern among its many merits its ability to seduce us, vintage after vintage, always such a classic and always so rich; we think you'll be amazed too by the gravitas of one of the Ribera del Duero's best Crianza wines, Viña Sastre Crianza 2012, another safe bet year after year; and we'd like to introduce you to the revitalised Jaspi Maragda 2012, a Montsant wine all set to jazz up your glasses, with its wide array of nuances and sensations.

We sincerely hope you enjoy them, and wish you a very Happy New Year!

Viña Alberdi 2009 (2 bottles)

Red Crianza. La Rioja Alta Rioja, Spain Tempranillo

Bottle: £9.30 club members / £10.70 non-members

Viña Alberdi is a classic and one with character. Describing a wine as classic can sometimes seem too easy or even appear an over-simplification of its personality, which couldn't be further from our intention. It is a classic, three times over: not only in colour, but on the nose and on the palate. Classic as synonymous with having great merits, being particularly appealing, very versatile gastronomically and the sort of wine that always tempts you to come back for more. A classic, and not just another Rioja, this is a wine brimming with fine attributes.

Viña Alberdi exudes an excellent aroma, very fresh acidity and well-integrated oak; it's fruit-forward and has a most pleasant finish, with refreshing notes of pine needles. A wine which, even though it doesn't attain the same seriousness as some of the house's emblematic wines, is certainly not lacking in elegance or seduction. Its aromatic complexity, with aromas of Morello cherries, ripe fruit, orange peel, humus, tobacco, wax and leather, intensifies on the palate and offers a mix of seriousness and sensuality. Adorably classic, and why ever not?

Viña Alberdi is named after Don Nicolás Alberdi, the winery's president from 1947 to 1952, and its first vintage year was 1974.

Viña Sastre Crianza 2012 (2 bottles)

Red Crianza. Viña Sastre Ribera del Duero, Spain Tempranillo

Bottle: £12.16 club members / £14.00 non-members

The two reds of Viña Sastre's traditional range, both its Roble and its Crianza, always set themselves apart from their Ribera del Duero counterparts due to having extra depth and complexity, features which enhance and distinguish them. They are high quality wines, very well executed, powerful and complex, mature, that stand out as a result of their gravitas and elegance. They are made in the traditional way, without any ostentation and with very sensible and decent ageing, which corresponds with the winery's philosophy, defined by respect for the land, effective work in the field and due care of the vines. They reflect the Ribera del Duero's true identity and exemplify the profile of noble, elegant wines.

Besides being a very fine Crianza and an excellent choice at all times, Viña Sastre Crianza is characterised by its great freshness and surprises too with the presence of red fruit, when blueberries and black fruit are usually the norm in Ribera del Duero wines. Black and red fruit, ripe but smooth and spirited, flowing on the palate, accompanied by floral notes, black pepper, fine toasty nuances, meaty hints and a notable minerality. Its freshness and complexity surely result from the careful selection of grapes and the altitude of the plots where the vineyards lie, namely Las Navas, Caroa, Carrasantamaría, Fuentenarro, Valdelayegua, Cañuelo, Carranaguix and Bercial, all parcels of land located in Roa, in the province of Burgos, at an altitude of 815 metres. Restrained and elegant, a wine that's particularly impressive on the palate, very juicy, with plenty of fruit and wonderful acidity, giving full and leisurely enjoyment.

Jaspi Maragda 2012 (2 bottles)

Red Crianza. Coca i Fitó Montsant, Spain Grenache, Carignan, Syrah

Bottle: £11.02 club members / £12.69 non-members

When you taste this wine, you'll be amazed by its huge array of nuances and sensations. It's a meaty, pleasant wine, sometimes penetratingly deep, at others luscious, feminine and seductive, at times majestic and truly resembling a wine to cellar... It's hard to describe and best defined by its label: a jazz musician. Like jazz music, Jaspi Maragda is a wine to take at a slow pace, enjoying its changes of rhythm, always nicely in harmony.

In Jaspi Maragda we find the joyfulness and succulence of the Garnacha, with a subtle caramel touch, the restraint of the Cariñena, always so elegant, and the roundness and consistency of the Syrah. A wine rich in acidic red and black fruits such as pomegranates and black cherries, warm bakery and earthy notes and hints of chocolate and tobacco, with a velvety feel, smooth and fresh.

NOTE: Despite its easy-going nature, this wine has been conceived as one to lay down, which is why decanting is recommended especially during its early years.
