Jaspi Negre 2010 (2 bottles)

Young red Crianza. Coca i Fitó Montsant, Spain Grenache, Carignan, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah

Bottle: £6.32 club members / £7.22 non-members

Jaspi is a most pleasant wine, attractive, easy to drink, subtle and seductive, with an interesting evolution in the glass that imbues it with density on the nose and noticeable volume. We could sum it up as an ideal wine for leisure drinking and a fine example of a young Montsant wine, combining grapes sourced from different terroirs.

In appearance, it isn’t very dense, of medium density in fact, but really intense and bright, and a dark cherry colour; on the nose it displays an aromatic assortment of fruits, especially ripe red ones (strawberries, cherries, cranberries and raspberries), with liquorice and spicy notes; it is decidedly fresh. The impression on the nose is then confirmed exactly the same on the palate, and its silky nature and subtle tannins come over too. This is a wine with no rough edges and very drinkable, not offering complexity yet complex enough in its price range, with plenty of length on the palate and supremely tasty from the first to the last sip. (Don’t miss those fresh aromas of red berry fruits that are still coming up from the bottom of the glass when there are no more than a few drops of wine left).

  • Alcohol content: 14,5%
  • Optimum serving temperature: Between 16ºC and 17ºC
  • Drink now or keep until 2014.

Ressons 2007 (2 bottles)

Red Crianza. Celler Mas d'en Canonge Catalunya, Spain Grenache, Syrah

Bottle: £6.75 club members / £7.66 non-members

Ressons is a wine with maturity and minerality. It is one of those Montsant wines that makes us realise just how fine the dividing line is in some areas separating the Montsant from the Priorat. Nature has no perception of borders, and the slate soil that supports and sustains these old Garnacha vineyards which produce the grapes (along with the Syrah) is very evident in this wine. (Don’t be confused by the label: since this is the winery’s first vintage and due to not complying yet with certain formal requirements, Ressons 2007 could not be labelled as Montsant D.O. and came under the Catalunya D.O. instead, so make the most of the lower price!

Ressons appears visually as a vibrant colour of deepest dark cherry, bright and of medium density. Its nose is sweet yet spirited, and fresh, becoming even fresher, balsamic and mineral too as it gradually opens up in the glass, with intense notes of ripe black fruit, of prunes, on a background of dried fruits and a touch of spice. Structured, fruit-forward and pleasant on the palate, it has plenty of volume and some sturdy, polished tannins. Although not particularly long, it has good acidity and a marked mineral presence that leaves a slightly bitter finish which fully confirms the impression of a consistent, well-integrated wine.

Ressons 2007 doesn’t need decanting at the moment, as it is mature and ready for drinking: enjoy it now - it’s absolutely delightful!

  • Alcohol content: 14,5%
  • Optimum serving temperature: Between 16ºC and 18ºC
  • Drink now or keep until 2013.

Furvus 2008 (2 bottles)

Red Crianza. Vinyes Domènech Montsant, Spain Hairy Grenache, Merlot

Bottle: £12.87 club members / £14.63 non-members

Although what is meant by a “feminine wine” is always a bit delicate and a little confused, you are sure to immediately understand when we say that Furvus is a feminine wine.

Vinyes Domènech wines are characterised by their smoothness and subtlety, and Furvus is no exception: it is perfumed, showing refined minerality on the nose, combined with delicate aromas of red fruits, cranberries and plums; it has finesse and generosity, and its tannins are present but mellowed and elegant. An absolute delight.

Furvus starts life in a landscape of outstanding beauty, between two fine mountain ranges, the Llaberia and the Montalt, with the Mediterranean Sea to the back and Montsant to the north, and its Mediterranean personality is unquestionable: it is warm and fresh on the nose (you may detect notes of pine kernels, and resin possibly…, others may smell damp leaves – definitely aromas of trees and woods), and creamy on the palate, with a pleasant texture that surely must come from that velvety Hairy Garnacha, and smoothness from the Merlot and, of course, from a job well done. Don’t be fooled by its pale colour, a ruby red of medium intensity: it is a fully-rounded wine, with plenty of depth and a lengthy, persistent aftertaste, leaving us with a slight vanilla finish.

NOTE: Opening the bottle and decanting the wine half an hour before serving is recommended.
