Galena 2006 (2 bottles)

Red Crianza. Domini de la Cartoixa Priorat, Spain Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Carignan

Bottle: £12.33 club members / £14.51 non-members

Galena is this bodega’s second wine and, as such, it has modest pretensions. Modest and sincere, like its maker, the talented Miguel Pérez Cerrada. A superb creation that portrays the effort, consummate care and attention to detail shown by the whole of the Domini de la Cartoixa team.

When blind tasted, the first sensations revealed by Galena 2006 recall the refinement and style of Álvaro Palacios. It shows wonderful maturity and has in particular a clean quality with great freshness. Notes of extra fine cocoa and orange citrus fruits set the pulses racing. This is definitely a fine wine - muscular and well-developed - that amply satisfies the taste buds.

A very fine Priorat indeed!

Aged for 12 months in French and American oak barrels.

Camins del Priorat 2008 (2 bottles)

Young red Crianza. Álvaro Palacios Priorat, Spain Carignan, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah

Bottle: £10.50 club members / £12.36 non-members

Álvaro Palacios will never fail to surprise us. We may not always appreciate his style, nor totally share his concept of creating wine, but what we can’t possibly deny is that Álvaro is a pure genius who has known how to adapt to modern times without causing his wines to lose one single jot of class. What we’re considering here is the need to offer wines which are more affordable, plus more accessible in their style, wines that allow us to get to know the true essence of the Priorat, with its minerality and fruity character, without reaching the complexity of the great classic wines.

Camins del Priorat is presented as their entry-level wine, yet it still has its own character: a wine for those who can appreciate something that is tastefully beautiful and pleasantly fragrant. Purplish in colour, among its aromas there are clear hints of the skin of ripe fruit, juicy fruit like… watermelon! Flowers are constantly present too, with touches that remind us of a close relative, Pétalos del Bierzo…, or of Belgian beer like Franziskaner, due to that mix of flowers and banana (try it, coming up slowly to the glass and taking a deep breath). On the palate, there’s a refined onslaught of blackberries and blackcurrants; this is a wine with a full-bodied feel and a velvety texture. What more could you ask from an entry-level wine?

Camins, Camins (walks), walking on the moon...

  • Alcohol content: 14,0%

Serras del Priorat 2009 (2 bottles)

Young red Crianza. Clos Figueras Priorat, Spain Grenache, Carignan, Syrah

Bottle: £9.85 club members / £11.59 non-members

Strong competition and the financial crisis are forcing many winemakers to establish a new line of wines, a “third tier” or generation in the family of wines. In the case of Clos Figueras, sitting at the top is Clos Figueras (their first wine), Font de la Figuera (the second wine) and Serras del Priorat (the third wine).

Serras del Priorat bears a certain resemblance to Alain Graillot’s wines (the Rhone, France): a wonderful purple shade, notable tears and boldly fragrant aromas of liquor, cocoa, coffee and charcoal embers. It comes as a surprise to encounter definite aromatic notes typical of white winemaking, a distinctive trait that endows Serras with fine balsamic acidity on the nose.

This is a rounded, voluminous wine, juicy and intense, with just a whiff of carbonated liveliness; but if you want to enjoy it at its optimum, then wait a while and leave it to settle down. Displaying plenty of energy at present, it augurs extremely well for the future.

Perfect as an accompaniment to turbot served with lime and thyme.

Aged for 8 months in 300 and 500-litre second year French oak barrels.

  • Alcohol content: 14,5%
  • Optimum serving temperature: 15ºC
  • Drink now or keep until 2015.
