Quinta Mazuela 2005 (2 bottles)

Young red Crianza. Bodega Quinta Mazuela Carignan, Spain Tempranillo, Merlot

Bottle: £10.10 club members / £11.91 non-members

On uncorking a bottle of Quinta Mazuela 2005, a delicate fragrance of orange peel is the first aroma to pervade the air. We appreciate the appearance of this beautifully-coloured, fine wine: it looks wonderful. Then we close our eyes and the nose takes us straight to Bordeaux (that would be nice!): gentle, subtle balsamic wafts, spicy notes, ripe plums, figs and oranges, all figure in the olfactory array exuded.

Let the wine settle in the glass and then see how it expresses all its fine qualities. Allowing a little time and at the right temperature, there unfolds the aromatic nuances of vanilla, cocoa and toffee. Another wonderful treat! Once in the mouth, it will touch the taste buds with a gentle caress, a glossy sheen. A wine that actually glides!

QM 2005, for the whimsical amongst us!

Quinta Mazuela 2007 (2 bottles)

Young red Crianza. Bodega Quinta Mazuela Carignan, Spain Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah

Bottle: £11.59 club members / £11.59 non-members

Quinta Mazuela 2007 is the perfect example of wine undergoing evolution that leaves its early primary aromas behind and moves into a sphere of more gentle fragrance. Sound advice is to aerate the wine fully, achieved by a good pouring out into a suitable container, in order to volatize the esters, the releasing of aromatic molecules, which have a profound impact at the start. Then wafts of cider and Calvados will appear; redolent of fermented and distilled apple. Afterwards, a succession of dark-berried fruits come into play (mulberries, blackberries), all well-ripened.

This same tendency in feel and texture will continue in the years to come, providing a steely edge and an oily touch, along with an interesting acidity ‘bubbling up under the surface’.

QM 2007, developing nicely.

Quinta Mazuela 2008 (2 bottles)

Young red Crianza. Bodega Quinta Mazuela Carignan, Spain Merlot, Petit Verdot, Syrah

Bottle: £11.59 club members / £11.59 non-members

“What a gorgeous wine!” is the expert view expressed by sommeliers on tasting Quinta Mazuela 2008. A masterly stroke by Silvia Tomé was to include the Petit Verdot grape variety in the wine’s make-up.

The wine has just gone onto the market and still comes over as young, but positive signs predict a really good wine. After its appearance in three vintages, the wine has become demonstrably more powerful. Although its vinification followed traditional lines, the fresh aromas arise from carbonic maceration: strawberry-flavoured bubble gum, jelly beans, candy sticks and red mulberries… A delicious array of sweets!

Observations on the nose reveal characteristics of a distilled nature, namely grappa. QM 2008 is kept for a few months in the winery or the presence in the mouth of carbon dioxide could make it feel slightly grainy, sharp and anaesthetic-like. A pain-numbing wine!

In profile, however, the wine is full-bodied and its great freshness and fruit-filled juiciness linger on. QM 2008, a Cariñena in body and soul.
