Julian Haart

Julian Haart comes from a family of vine growers in Piesport, in the Central Moselle, although he began his professional life as a cook. From cookery he moved on to winemaking, always alongside great stars: in the kitchen, cooking shoulder to shoulder with some of the best chefs in Germany; in the vineyard, learning from masters of the likes of Heymann-Löwenstein, Emrich-Schönleber, Egon Müller and Klaus Peter Keller, with whom he spent just over three years.

After establishing himself in his home town of Piesport, one of the towns with the most long-standing tradition and history of winemaking in the area, Julian Haart devoted his full attention to his small 2.5 hectare estate in the Grosses Gewächs Goldtröpfchen (including 0.7 ha in the part called Schubertslay, a sub-section of this estate with a unique microclimate and century-old vines) and 1.3 ha in the Ohligsberg GC. All his vineyards are planted with the noble Riesling grape variety, on soils of decomposed slate typically found in the Moselle. Work is carried out traditionally, by hand, without the use of herbicides or chemical fertilisers in the field and using stainless steel tanks and 1,000-litre, old oak casks in the cellar.

Julian Haart is a talented man, whose philosophy resembles the one followed in Burgundy: right from his first vintage, the 2011, he has always sought elegance and subtlety, keeping the fruit's purity and preserving the Riesling grape's natural acidity, in wines made in the usual Moselle way, with moderate alcohol content, and proving most pleasurable to drink.
