With a more accessible profile than the grandiose Pingus, Flor de Pingus comes forward as a very interesting option for discovering why the wines of Peter Sisseck have caused such a stir on the wine-making scene, year after year reaching prices beyond the reach of all but a few.
Summary of Peter Sisseck’s evaluation of the 2012 vintage
2012 has been a year characterised by a shortage of water. Winter left scant reserves of water in the soil, it rained very little during spring and the situation did not improve until September, with some rainfall but not much. Temperatures were relatively normal through spring and the beginning of summer, although a little warmer than usual starting from the onset of ripening until harvesting. The harvest was quite early due to the lack of rain and build-up of heat, and rather better than average.
As a vintage, 2012 will be a year when the quality of the soils will make the difference: only vines planted in the best soils managed to adapt themselves perfectly to the atmospheric conditions and produced the finest fruit; in such quality soils, plant growth was well-balanced, and maturation was unhurried and perfect. However, vines planted on overly clay soils suffered and appeared weak right from budding, while those growing on sandier soils lost a number of their leaves due to the heat at the end of the summer.
